Backlink Checker: How to Find Link Opportunities Worth Having

A backlink checker is the SEO equivalent of a magnifying glass: it shows who links to your site, who links to your competitors, and where the gaps are.

By the SEO Holmes teamPublished: Updated: 6 min read

In shortA backlink checker is a tool that lists the websites linking to a domain. Used well, it helps a business audit its own links, spot competitor link gaps and build a shortlist of relevant sites to approach. No tool earns links by itself: the value comes from the outreach that follows.

What a backlink checker actually tells you

A backlink checker crawls the web and records which pages link to which. Feed it your domain and you get a list of the sites that vouch for you. Feed it a competitor's domain and you see who vouches for them.

Search engines treat links from relevant, trusted sites as a signal of credibility. The checker does not tell you your rankings, but it shows the evidence behind them. These are the columns worth reading:

  • Referring domains: the number of different sites linking to you. This matters more than the raw count of links.
  • Anchor text: the words used in the link. A natural mix of brand names, plain URLs and descriptive phrases looks healthy.
  • Link type: follow, nofollow, sponsored or user-generated. All can bring visitors, but they are not equal for SEO.
  • New and lost links: links that appeared or disappeared recently, which often explain a movement in rankings.
  • Top linked pages: which of your pages attract links, and which important pages attract none.

Step 1: audit your own link profile first

Before hunting for new links, check what you already have. Export your referring domains and sort them by relevance, not by the tool's authority score. Look for the odd ones: foreign-language directories, comment spam, sites with no real content.

Most small business sites have a few of these and they are rarely a problem. A pattern is a problem: hundreds of links with identical keyword anchors, or links from sites that exist only to sell links. If you did not build them and they look paid, note them. If you bought them yourself in the past, that is worth knowing before any new campaign.

Step 2: run a competitor link gap

The most useful report in any backlink checker is the link gap, sometimes called link intersect. Enter your domain and two or three competitors who rank where you want to rank. The tool lists sites that link to the competitors but not to you.

Pick competitors that rank for your search terms, not just big brands in your sector. For a dental clinic in Athens, a national dental portal and a few local clinics are better benchmarks than an international health publisher.

A site that links to two or three of your competitors has already shown it is willing to link to businesses like yours. That is the shortest shortlist you will ever get.

Step 3: qualify every opportunity before you contact anyone

A raw gap report will contain hundreds of domains and most are not worth your time. Qualify each one with five quick questions:

  • Is the site genuinely about your topic or your region?
  • Does it have real visitors and recent content, or is it abandoned?
  • Is the link editorial, placed by a human because the page deserved it?
  • Would you be comfortable if the site's owner saw your brand next to theirs?
  • Does the page that would link to you have a natural reason to do so?

Why no tool is the key to SEO success

Tool vendors like to say their database is the biggest and their metrics the most accurate. Data coverage does differ, and it is sensible to compare two tools before you trust one number. But a database only lists where links exist today. It cannot persuade an editor to add yours.

Links that last come from useful pages, real relationships and honest outreach: a guide worth citing, a local partnership, a press mention, a guest article on a relevant site. Buying bulk links or running automated mass outreach is the fast road to a penalty, and the kind of shortcut that makes a good detective suspicious of a result.

Local links for Athens businesses

If you serve customers in Athens or Attica, your best opportunities often sit offline first: your chamber of commerce, trade associations, suppliers, local sponsorships, neighbourhood news sites and events you take part in. A backlink checker will show that your competitors already have some of these, which makes them easy to confirm and ask for.

Local links also support your Google Business Profile and local rankings, so they do double duty. See how this fits with maps visibility in our guide to local SEO.

From a list of domains to real links

A backlink checker gives you the leads; the case is solved by outreach, content and patience. If you would rather hand the investigation to a team, our off-page SEO and link building service runs gap analysis, qualifies targets and secures white-hat links on relevant sites. You can also start with a free SEO check and we will tell you where your link profile stands against your closest competitors.

Questions people ask

What is a backlink checker?

A backlink checker is a tool that lists the websites and pages linking to a domain, with data such as anchor text, link type and when the link was found. You can use it on your own site to audit your profile, and on competitors to see where their links come from and which of those sites you could also approach.

Is there a free backlink checker I can trust?

Google Search Console shows a sample of the sites linking to you for free, and several paid tools offer limited free reports. Free data is incomplete, so treat it as a starting point. For competitor research you normally need a paid tool, at least for a month while you collect the shortlist.

How many backlinks do I need to rank?

There is no fixed number. It depends on how competitive the search term is and on the quality of the links your rivals have. Compare the number of relevant referring domains for the pages currently ranking on page one. That tells you the realistic gap far better than any general target.
